Levensverhaal Paul Mhone

Paul Mhone

My name is Paul Mhone; I was born on 29 December 1998. In our family, there are three children, all boys, and I am the last born. I have been raised by a single parent (my mother); she has been responsible for my school fees since primary school. My mother was doing small business but, due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the business is no more. I obtained the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) Examinations in 2016, which I passed with 19 points. I applied for a place at the University of Malawi, College of Medicine, to study for the Bachelor of Science in Medicine and Surgery, but unfortunately, I was not selected. I also applied to study at Kachere Medical Rehabilitation College in 2017, and, by the grace of God, I was selected. It was a three-year course but I did not complete it because of school fees problems. In the year 2018, I applied at Malawi College of Health Sciences and was selected to study to obtain the Diploma in Clinical Medicine for the duration of three years. Unfortunately, all of us who were selected for this Diploma course were considered to take care of themselves financially because the government could not afford to support all the needy students. In 2019, I started my studies at Malawi College of Health Sciences and currently I am studying for a diploma in Clinical Medicine, but my worry is on the provision of school fees which are as high as €890 per year. It was possible to start because prior to covid 19 my mother had realized some money from her business and paid half the fees for the first semester. In the second semester I was chased out of college, then my mother brought the issue before our pastor, Rev. Tsegula, who in turn, brought us before Pastor Kaiya, who graciously assisted us with the balance and also paid for the second semester. But we were advised that it was one-time assistance. It is my wish to finish my studies in medicine because it has been my dream and passion. As said, my mother is currently unable to pay for my school fees because she stopped doing business in June 2020 due to the impact of Covid-19. However, I am extremely happy that ReachOut is helping me by providing a scholarship and paying for the other costs relating to my studies.
